All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ JOHN DAVID MILLER Dr. John David Miller, 79, one of Bridgewater, Va.'s most prominent residents, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for the past ten days. Dr. Miller had been in ill health for the past four years, his condition becoming critical about two weeks ago. The son of the late Rev. Martin P. and Rebecca (Heatwole) Miller, he was born May 7, 1870, at Spring Creek Va., where he spent his early childhood and attended the local schools. He later graduated from Peabody Normal School in Nashville, Tennessee. He also graduated from Bridgewater College in 1901. He then taught at Bridgewater College for two years and then entered the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond where he graduated in 1906. He taught school in Rockingham County for twelve years. In 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Cline of Stuarts Draft, who survives. Dr. Miller was a member of the Board of Trustees of Bridgewater College for a number of years and served as College physician for a number of years, until his health failed. He was a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren since boyhood. Dr. Miller resided in Bridgewater since 1906 and served the vicinity faithfully until April 1945 when he retired due to ill health. He is well known throughout his home community and county and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, both as a friend and family physician. He was also well known in Church of the Brethren circles in Meyersdale having frequently visited his daughter, Mrs. Edgar Gnagey, and son, the Rev. DeWitt Miller, former pastor here. He was the surviving member of a family of nine, his sister, Miss Sue Miller, preceding him in death last Tuesday. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. J. D. Miller of Bridgewater, one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Gnagey of Meyersdale, Pa., and one son, Dr. DeWitt Miller, pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Washington, D.C., one grandson, David Leroy Miller and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. from the United Church of the Brethren in Bridgewater, the Rev. Edward K. Zigler officiating. Interment in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Bridgewater, under the direction of W. L. Rosenberger Funeral Home. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Wayland W. Miller, Francis S. Miller, Martin Q. Miller, Martin Bowman, Warren D. Bowman, Martin Miller, Arthur Miller and Jacob Miller. The family requested no flowers be sent; however, expressions of appreciation and friendship will be applied toward equipping a room in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
