Born Jan. 15, 1925, in Black Township, he is the son of the late James and Catherine (Gephart) Mitchell. He is also preceded in death by his son, George F. Mitchell Jr. on Dec. 8, 1972; brothers, Robert "Bob" Mitchell, James "Jack" Mitchell, and Floyd Mitchell; and sisters, Hilda Young, Mary Steele, Thelma Brock and Gladys Walk. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anola (Shroyer) Mitchell; daughter, Betty (Mitchell) Knopsnyder, Berlin; grandchildren, Barbara (Knopsnyder) Nemchik and husband, Thomas "Rick;" Leroy Knopsnyder and wife, Karen (Kiraly); Tonia (Knopsnyder) Delancy and husband, Daniel; Tina (Knopsnyder) Rock and husband, Jason; and Timothy Knopsnyder; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Justin Nemchik, Blaine and Shawna Knopsnyder, Gwendolyn and Randy Delancy, and Austin and Dakota Rock; brothers and sisters, Sue Weimer and husband, Kenneth; Herman Mitchell and wife, Verna; Ernie Mitchell and wife, Elma; Florence Kelly and husband, Fred; Everett "Bus" Mitchell and wife, Peggy; and Bill Mitchell and wife, Nancy; and numerous nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. George is a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and worked for the Croner Corp. as a truck driver and farmer. He was a member of the United Mine Workers' Local 1742 and worked for the G.M. Coal Co. in Jennerstown. He was a member of the Beachdale Church of the Brethren, life member of the Jenner Rod and Gun Club, the VFW in Berlin, and the Berlin Volunteer Fire Co. George very much enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending lots of time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. The family will be receiving family and friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset, where a service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Ralph Landis officiating. George will be laid to rest at Rockwood IOOF Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Somerset County Honor Guard.
