Mittelstaedt died at his home in Salisbury on Thursday, Dec. 16, after an illness lasting almost a year, most of which he was bedfast. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., January 13, 1885, son of Margretta (Becker) and August Mittelstaedt and was 63 years, 11 months and three days old at his passing. Mr. Mittelstaedt had been employed for more than 40 years by the Wayne Lumber Co. of Brooklyn, as a lumber inspector, and was the company's oldest employee. He had been working in New York State prior to his illness and had been employed in many parts of Pennsylvania and the east by his company. He was a member of the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department, and is the first member to have died while he was on the roll. He had been known to his fellow firemen for years as "the boss" because of his work at the time the firemen were building the stands in the community park. Mr. Mittelstaedt married Mrs. Mildred (Glotfelty) Statler on August 22, 1910, and his wife and one daughter, Ruby, survive him. He is also survived by four brothers: John of South Colton, N.Y.; Theodore of Northville, N.Y.; Emil of Fleischman, N.Y., and Edward of Livingston Manor, N.Y.; and by three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Mosher and Miss Emma Mittelstaedt of Port Washington, Long Island, and Mrs. Otto Weber of Fleischman, N.Y. Funeral services were conducted in the Thomas Funeral Chapel at 1:15 on Sunday with the Rev. Ira S. Monn, pastor of St. John's Reformed Church, officiating. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in charge of Stanley M. Thomas, funeral director. Meyersdale Republican, December 23, 1948
