MORGART William Arthur Morgart, 82, pioneer coal operator of this section and Allegany County, Md., died at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 12, at his home in Jennings, Md. He suffered a fractured hip in a fall last Tuesday, and the injury caused complications which resulted in his death. He was born April 12, 1862, in the Bottle Run section of Allegany County, near the Pennsylvania line, a son of the late Peter and Amanda Wolford Morgart. In 1896 he discovered the mineral wealth in the Casselman River basin of Garrett County, Md., and in recent years he and his son developed the fire clay and coal operations around Jennings. Mr. Morgart resided in Jennings for a number of years and was well known in the county, having at one time an interest in the Casselman Valley Railroad, an extension of the Salisbury branch of the B & O from Worth, Pa., near the state line, to Jennings, Md. Survivors besides his son, Louis A. Morgart, of Jennnings, are two daughters, Mrs. Harold R. Gibson and Mrs. William A. Atcheson, Arlington, Va., and a grandson, Pvt. David F. Butchers, stationed in New Guinea. Mrs. Morgart passed away last November. Since then his daughter, Phyllis, has cared for her father. Mr. Morgart was a Democrat, but never sought or held public office. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Wolford Funeral Home, Cumberland. Rev. Louis H. Euald, pastor of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, conducted the services. The body was shipped to Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, for cremation, and will be interned later in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland. Meyersdale Republican, August 17, 1944
