Death has put an end to her woes and she is now at rest with the two little children who preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Mountain, who had been a patient in the Somerset Community Hospital from March 1 until April 13, when she was removed to the Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, suffered from mal-nutrition, anemia and a lung condition resulting from pneumonia contracted last January. During her stay in the Somerset hospital she underwent a rib-resection, and more than two quarts of pus were removed from her side. Tragedy has been the lot of the Mountain family since mid-winter, when a baby, weighing but two and a half pounds was born to the frail mother who lived with her family of seven children in a two-room shack in a remote nook on Laurel Hill Mountain. The tiny infant, born without a doctor's assistance, lived 11 days, then succumbed in the Somerset Community Hospital, to which it had been admitted a scant 12 hours before its death. About two weeks later Mrs. Mountain, who had been confined to her bed since January, was admitted to the Somerset hospital. She had been a patient in the institution but a short while when a daughter aged 7, was fatally burned when her clothing caught fire while she was standing in front of a redhot stove. She died March 14, three days after admission to the Somerset hospital. Although Mrs. Mountain was still in the Somerset Hospital when her little girl died there from burns, the mother was not informed of her death, for fear the shock would be too much for her. Last Sunday morning her husband, John Mountain, and their oldest son, Jacob, went to the Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, to visit her, but upon their arrival learned that she died during the night. Mrs. Mountain was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Daugherty, and was born in Irwin, Pa., 38 years ago. She was one of nine children, three sons and six daughters. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10:30 in the Hauger Funeral Home, Somerset. Interment in the Bakersville Cemetery, with funeral services conducted by Rev. C. A. Shilke, pastor of the Bakersville Lutheran Church. Meyersdale Republican, May 2, 1940
