The tiny baby, weighing but two pounds, seven and one-quarter ounces, ten days after birth, was first placed in a heated crib in the hospital and later transferred to an incubator. During his brief stay in the hospital he took nourishment from a medicine dropper regularly, until the strain of neglect and malnutrition proved too much for the frail little body. The remains were buried by Mortician Charles R. Hauger, in the Bakersville Cemetery at 4:30 p.m., after the father came home from work. Thursday afternoon, John C. Lowry, assistant to Mr Hauger, made the climb into the mountains to tell the family of their loss. He was met at the door by the father, John M. Mountain, who was home because of no work on Washington's birthday. The mother began to cry when told that her baby had died, but seemed mollified when informed that its pitiful little body would be placed in a little white casket and buried in the Bakersville Cemetery. Carrying with him, as he climbed the mountain side, Mr. Lowry had a large sack of oranges, apples, cabbages, candy and other edibles for the family, the contribution of H. C. Beerits' Sons.
