Born Oct. 27, 1913, in Garrett, she grew up in nearby Boswell, the daughter of the late Harry and Ada Speicher. Also preceded in death by a brother, H. Brumbaugh Speicher. Survived by her husband of 67 years, Ralph F. Murray, Carlisle and two sisters, Frances Ballatine, Las Vegas, Nev., and Wilma Ashe, Plymouth, Ind. A graduate of Juniata College in Huntingdon and Queens College in New York, she was a high school English teacher in Boswell and Jericho, N.Y., later becoming the coordinating reading specialist at the latter. In addition, she taught English classes for immigrants and tutored at a drug rehabilitation facility as well as privately. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, by whom she was named Woman of the Year for her volunteer reading program at the Adams County Jail in Gettysburg. She also received honors from the Court of Common Pleas and other clubs and committees for that literacy program. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. In addition to her teaching, she created an original remedial literacy program, wrote a history of the Adams County Library, a biography of her father and various other chronicles of her work.
