He was one of Grantsville's oldest and most highly respected citizens, having been born here June 25, 1843, and spent his entire life of 87 years here. He was a son of John and Margaret Carroll Nathan who came from Ireland and settled in Garrett County nearly a century ago. Mr. Nathan is survived by a son, Captain Carroll C. Nathan, and a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Endsley, who made her home with her father. Miss Gertrude Hone of Meyersdale and Mrs. Truman Frankhouser, of Keyser, W.Va., and J. Clarence Miller, of town, are nieces and nephew of Mr. Nathan. He was the last survivor of a family of five children. Mr. Nathan, in his young manhood, was a cooper by trade. He served as postmaster of Grantsville for several terms, also as mayor of Grantsville several terms. He made two trips to Nome, Alaska, in the early nineties, and lived retired for a number of years. He was a man of sterling character and was a very active and faithful member of the Roman Catholic Church, and was a strong Republican politically. Mr. Nathan married Miss Jennie Beachy, daughter of the late Samuel J. and Rehamah (Knepper) Beachy, who died July 14, 1927. He had been in failing health for years, but when well enough was very active and cheerful. He had his breakfast as usual Sunday morning, and was sitting on his front porch when he became sick and walked to his room, where he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack from which he did not recover. The funeral was held at the Catholic Church, Tuesday morning, at 9 o'clock and was largely attended. Rev. Father Clarence of Cumberland officiated. The pall- bearers were U. O. and V. L. Blocher, Wm. Wright, Milton Rodamer, J. F. Fahey and D. W. Dorsey. Interment in the Grantsville Cemetery. Mr. Nathan was the oldest resident of Grantsville at the time of his death.
