He died six hours later in the Community Hospital at Somerset. Naylor, a negro miner was riding on top of a two-ton load of coal, returning from work at a custom coal mine. The truck operated by James Short, 39, of 34 Salisbury Street, turned off Grant Street at the power plant to go south on Salisbury Street, when Naylor, attempting to alight from the left side, slipped and fell beneath the dual wheels. The driver of the truck was unaware that Naylor intended to get off at this point but felt the truck jolt as the rear wheels passed over Naylor's body. He stopped the heavy truck at the foot of the steep grade and returned to where Naylor lay helpless, although conscious, in the road. Rushed to the Hazel McGilvery Hospital, Naylor was given emergency treatment, after which he was removed to the Community Hospital in Somerset in an ambulance. A thorough examination revealed serious internal injuries, and Naylor died at 11 o'clock, six hours after the accident. Coroner F. E. Sass impaneled a jury at noon Friday at the W. C. Price Funeral Home, which exonerated the driver, James Short, and other occupants of the truck from all blame. Members of the coroner's jury were John Bittner, Walter Reiber, S. D. Cramer, w. R. Price, Karl Bittner and Leo Shockey. Otis Naylor is survived by his parents, William and Willy (Trowder) Naylor, residing on Large Street in Meyersdale, and the following brothers and sisters: Carter and Strowder, at home; Mrs. Earl Stiller, Mrs. John Freedman, Mrs. John Jennings, Pittsburgh; and Mrs. Archie Willis, Cumberland, Md. Funeral services were held Sunday at the late residence, followed by interment in the Union Cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, morticians. Meyersdale Republican, March 14, 1940
