Newman, a prominent farmer of Milford Township died at his home near Rockwood on Tuesday, October 17, from infirmities incident to old age. He was born May 5, 1851, and was aged 81 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was a son of George and Mary (Ringler) Newman and was born and reared in the vicinity of Maple Glen, Elk Lick Township. After marrying Anna Fike, daughter of John J. Fike, he lived for several years on his father-in-law's farm in Summit Township, now owned and occupied by John P. Saylor. In 1885 he moved onto a farm in Milford Township, near Rockwood, where he lived until his death. He was one of the outstanding farmers and stockmen of that section for many years. He united with the Church of the Brethren at Meyersdale when he was 21 years old, to which he adhered until he was called to his heavenly home. He is survived by the following children: Judd, of Akron, Ohio; John, of Sharon, Pa.; Lloyd, of Uniontown, Pa.; Mrs. N. N. Shaulis, Norristown, Pa.; Mrs. Ollie Meyers, Harry and Milton, at home, and Calvin, of Rockwood. Two brothers and two sisters survive - Ananias Newman, of Los Angeles, Calif., Josiah Newman, of Hollidaysburg, Pa., and Mrs. C. Moreland and Mrs. David Shumaker, both of Omaha, Nebraska. He was the grandfather of Mrs. George Detweiler. The funeral services were conducted in the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Walter F. Berkebile.
