Newman, 63, well-known Somerset County teacher, died suddenly at his home near Rockwood, in Milford Township, Saturday morning, Feb. 27. He had been suffering from a heart ailment for three weeks, and had attended a basketball game, Friday evening in Rockwood. He was the son of the late Alexander and Anna (Fike) Newman of Milford Township. His wife died three years ago. He was a teacher for 43 years and for 25 years taught in Rockwood Borough. He began his teaching career when 20 years of age, his first position being in the one-room Pine Hill school at a salary of $252 a year. Following that, he taught in several other schools in the county and from 1923 to 1942, taught the eighth grade of the Rockwood school, later being transferred to Rockwood High School as mathematics instructor, and he continued teaching in that position until his death. He was also the athletic coach of the Rockwood High School. He is survived by two children - Mrs. Roy Long of Jersey City, N.J., and Dale C. Newman of Ebensburg. Also surviving are four brothers; Harry Newman, Rockwood; Milton and Lloyd Newman, Milford Township, and J. A. Newman of Akron, O., and a sister, Mrs. Nevin Shaulis. Funeral services were held on Monday at 2 p.m., at the Rockwood Church of the Brethren, Rev. W. F. Berkebile officiating. Burial was in the Berlin Cemetery under direction of Mills & Mickey, Rockwood morticians. Meyersdale Republican, March 4, 1948
