NEWMAN

Hubert L. Newman, 80, of Salisbury, died Feb. 21, 1988, Sacred Heart 
Hospital, Cumberland, Md.  Born April 21, 1907, in Salisbury, son of the 
late Elijah and Carrie (Lowry) Newman.  Also preceded in death by a brother, 
George.  Survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Hostetler; one son, John O. 
Newman of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Joshua and Ella; one cousin, Margaret 
Lowry of Salisbury; and one niece, Mary Helen Drabish of Salisbury.  He was a 
graduate of Penn State and the Pitt Graduate School.  He taught 35 years in 
the Salisbury High School system.  He was employed as a Somerset County 
Assessor and Chief Assessor for 10 years.  He was a veteran of World War II. 
Member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Salisbury.  A charter member of 
Salisbury Lions Club.  Member of Salisbury American Legion; member and past 
Master of Meyersdale Lodge 554, F. and A. M.; member of Harrisburg Consistory, 
and member of the Ali Ghan Shrine of Cumberland.  Friends will be received 
Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Thomas Funeral Home, Salisbury, where funeral 
services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.  
Interment, Salisbury Cemetery.
