Newman, 80, of Salisbury, died Feb. 21, 1988, Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. Born April 21, 1907, in Salisbury, son of the late Elijah and Carrie (Lowry) Newman. Also preceded in death by a brother, George. Survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Hostetler; one son, John O. Newman of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Joshua and Ella; one cousin, Margaret Lowry of Salisbury; and one niece, Mary Helen Drabish of Salisbury. He was a graduate of Penn State and the Pitt Graduate School. He taught 35 years in the Salisbury High School system. He was employed as a Somerset County Assessor and Chief Assessor for 10 years. He was a veteran of World War II. Member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Salisbury. A charter member of Salisbury Lions Club. Member of Salisbury American Legion; member and past Master of Meyersdale Lodge 554, F. and A. M.; member of Harrisburg Consistory, and member of the Ali Ghan Shrine of Cumberland. Friends will be received Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Thomas Funeral Home, Salisbury, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.
