Miss Newman had been in failing health for a number of years because of a heart condition, which recently turned serious. She was a former telephone operator in both Salisbury and Grantsville, but had been unable to work for several years because of her health. She was born in Salisbury on June 19, 1894, a daughter of Mary (Smalley) and Asa B. Newman, and was 54 years, five months and 27 days in age at her death. She is survived by one brother, Hobart Newman of Akron, O.; and by three sisters: Mrs. Alice Welfley, Salisbury; Mrs. Pearl McClain, Picture Rocks, Pa., and Mrs. Irene Koch, Saxton, Pa. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mrs. Welfley at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, with her pastor, the Rev. Ira S. Monn of St. John's Reformed Church, officiating. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in charge of Mortician Stanley M. Thomas. Meyersdale Republican, November 18, 1948
