Her death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage, and came as a surprise to her friends and neighbors. About a year and a half ago she had a light paralytic stroke, since which time she soon recovered from the stroke sufficiently to attend to her household duties, and to do occasional work for other people. So it was but natural to believe that she might live to become considerably older. Mrs. Newman was a daughter of the late Frederick and Mary Swauger Otto, and was born and reared in Garrett County, Md., as was also her late husband, whom she married on Jan. 1, 1889, and who preceded her to the grave on Jan. 25, 1912. Mr. and Mrs. Newman resided in Garrett County, Md., for the first few years after they were married, then located in Salisbury, where the remainder of their lives was spent. Mr. and Mrs. Newman were the parents of two sons, Gurney Evans and Otto O., the first named and elder of the two, having died on Jan. 13, 1916, survived by a wife and one child. Whether the wife and child of Gurney E. Newman are still living, or where, is not known to his surviving brother. In addition to her one surviving son, Mrs. Martha Ellen Newman is also survived by one brother, Frederick Otto, of New Germany, Md., and by four or five grandchildren. The funeral of Mrs. Newman was held in the home in which most of her life was spent, last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and was conducted by Rev. A. M. Wright, pastor of St. John's Reformed Church of Salisbury, of which she was a member for many years. The burial arrangement was in charge of Funeral Director W. C. Price, of Meyersdale. Interment was made in the Salisbury I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, September 1, 1932
