Newman, 96, Confluence, died January 28, 2007, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. She was born November 8, 1910, in Salisbury, a daughter of John C. and Mary Jane (Rees) Lichliter. She is preceded in death by parents; husband of 63 years, Ward C. Newman; and brothers: G. Rees Lichliter and John C. Lichliter Jr. She is survived by a son, Buck, and wife, Sarah, Lake St. Louis, Mo.; granddaughter, Shannon Crist, and husband, Matt, Moberly, Mo.; great-granddaughters: Maggie Joan and Camryn Jane Crist; loving sister and best friend, Emily Jane Hickson, Confluence; nieces: Nancy White, and husband, Charles, Atkinson, N.H.; Debra Spencer and husband, Ron, West Union, W. Va.; great-nieces: Laura White, Boston; Blaine Thomason and husband, Jason, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Midshipman Jennie Rae Spencer, Annapolis, Md. Also numerous other nieces and nephews. She graduated from Salisbury High School, attended Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove and graduated from Duff's Business School Pittsburgh. After graduation, Winnie returned home to Salisbury and was active in the Lichliter family store until her marriage to Ward, also of Salisbury. Together they moved to Confluence and established Confluence Ford Sales, later Riverside Motor Sales. She was a member of the Confluence United Methodist Church, Methodist Women, Confluence Women's Civic Club and was a 50-year cancer survivor. Friends were received at the Humbert Funeral Home, Confluence, where a service was held at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Linda Dinger officiating. Interment Salisbury Cemetery.
