Nicholson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native of Elk Lick Township, former minister of the Ohio and Pittsburgh Synods of the Reformed Church, passed away at his home in the South Saturday about midnight Jan. 18. Rev. Nicholson was a sufferer from a heart ailment since his retirement from the ministry a number of years ago, and his condition had not been good during the past year, but his death came unexpectedly and as a shock to his relatives here. Burial was made in Ft. Lauderdale. Rev. Nicholson was 77 years of age, having been born, the son of Simon and Elizabeth Nicholson, in the "Matick home", in Elk Lick Township, December 29, 1864. In his youth he worked as a farm boy and attended only a few short terms of country school at St. Paul. It was not until he was 21 years old that he set out to get his education for himself. Working for his board on the Jonas Peck farm (now Bird Bros.) he earned enough to go to normal school by mining coal on Saturdays. He taught a term or two at Springs, Pa., and the story goes that it was he who gave the village its name. While attending school at Meyersdale, and from time to time thereafter, he worked for Lew Smith, publisher of the Meyersdale Commercial, sometimes "getting out" the weekly edition when the editor was indisposed. Fired by his ambition to become a preacher he continued his schooling at Rimersburg, Grove City and Tiffin, Ohio, until in 1896, just eleven years from the time he started his self-education, he was ordained and installed by St. Joseph Classis of Ohio Synod. In the years following he served charges at Colon, Mich., Monroe, and Grove City. In 1897 he was married to Miss Lilly Good of Tiffin, Ohio, and to this union the following children were born: Paul R., Stanley R., Anna and Nevin. Stanley preceded his father to the grave. Besides the other above named children he is survived by his wife, one brother, Richard S. Nicholson of Meyersdale, and three sisters, Harriet Nicholson and Mrs. Ella Krouse, Trans-Meyersdale and Mrs. Phoebe Jonas, State College, Pa. A brother, W. W. Nicholson of Meyersdale, passed away last year. Meyersdale Republican, January 23, 1941
