He was born June 12, 1919, in Confluence, a son of the late Silas and Edith (Dayton) Nickelson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile (Randall); a daughter, Janet; two brothers and four sisters. Survived by his wife, the former Josephine (Younkin) Mitchell Nicholson; a daughter, Patricia Waltz of Lansing, Mich.; step children, Harry Mitchell, Riverton, Wyo.; Daniel Mitchell, Fayetteville, N.C.; Debra Tannehill, Somerset; and Robert Mitchell, Confluence; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Luca and Emma Waltz; eight step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren. A brother, John Nickelson of Confluence; and three sisters, Sara McCulley, Confluence; Grace Porterfield and Freda Hathaway, both of Lorain, Ohio. He served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II, and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years service, and from the Civil Service after an additional 20 years. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Humbert Funeral Home, Confluence, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with Dan Helenek and Carlton Schooley officiating.
