Beachy Nissley, 100, former resident of Grantsville, MD, died at the Sunnyside Nursing Home, Sarasota, FL, on March 21, 1993. Born July 23, 1892 in Bittinger, MD, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth (Lohr) Beachy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Joseph Nissley, in 1970; five brothers and three sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She received her formal education at Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, VA, and Frostburg State University, Frostburg, MD. She taught school in the mountains of western Maryland for approximately 30 years. She was known to have had over 60 pupils in a one-room schoolhouse, and taught all subjects in all eight grades. During her lifetime, she was actively involved in the work of the Mennonite Church. Surviving is a foster son, Thomas Bittinger, of Uniontown OH, as well as four generations of nieces and nephews. Services were conducted at the Tourist Mennonite Church on March 24. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery, Sarasota, FL. Officiating at the funeral service were Jack Weaver, Walter Shank and Amos Harst. New Republic, April 22, 1993 [N0307]
