(Elmer) Clyde Oaks, 100, formerly of Airville, Pa., died Feb. 4, 1995, at the Brethren Home Village at Cross Keys, Pa. Born March 2, 1894, in Johnstown, son of George and Annie (Hahn) Oaks. Married Mary Clark Oaks on June 30, 1934, and was at her side when she died June 6, 1994. Also preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers. Survived by four children: Anna Louise Hare, Ossining, N.Y.; Susan M. Leonard, Spring Grove, Pa.; Agnes Steffy, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and John C. Oaks, Morgantown, W. Va.; nine grandchildren. Veteran of World War I, he joined the American Legion at its beginning and remained a life member. Served as chaplain of Central City Keystone Post 449. He began teaching in 1913 at the one-room Huston School near Reels Corner, and taught in Stoystown, Hooversville and Quemahoning Township before returning to full-time studies for his B.S. in education at Indiana State Teachers College. Earned his master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1948. Retired from Shade High School in 1959. Served as Shade Township auditor for 18 years. Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Berg Funeral Home Inc., 134 E. Broadway, Red Lion, and from 10 until time of service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chanceford Presbyterian Church, Airville, where service will be held at 11 a.m. His pastor, the Rev. Harry R. Robinson and Pastor John Layman, chaplain at the Brethren Home, Cross Keys, officiating. Interment, Chanceford Presbyterian Cemetery, Airville.
