Born Dec. 5, 1924, in Johnstown to James Earl Ogle Jr. and Louise Crist Ogle. His father was an attorney in Johnstown. His great, great, great, grandfather Alexander Ogle, came into this area prior to 1795 when what is now Somerset County was still part of Bedford County and served this county as its representative to the Pennsylvania House and Senate and as its first representative to the U.S. Congress. Mr. Ogle was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: James Earl Ogle III, John Lane Ogle, Jere Ogle and Charles William Ogle; and sister Joan Ogle Price. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Metz Ogle and these children: James Earl Ogle IV, married to the former Deborah Corke; John Metz Ogle, married to the former Barbara Toth; and Thomas Alexander Ogle, married to the former Carol Locklin and five grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Peter W. Ogle, Portland, Ore. Mr. Ogle graduated from Westmont Upper-Yoder High School in 1942 and enrolled in the University of Michigan. His education was interrupted after one year by World War II when he left the University to enter the Navy and volunteered for the submarine service where he served in four war patrols aboard the USS Pargo. After 32 months of active duty, he was discharged in 1946 and within two weeks, he was on his way back to the University of Michigan. Due to health reasons he left that University and enrolled at the University of Colorado where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1948. In 1951 he received his law degree from Dickinson Law School in Carlisle. After graduating from law school and passing the bar exams, he came to Somerset to practice in the firm of Kooser & Courtney. Ernest Kooser, who was a distant cousin, had been Mr. Ogle's preceptor. Upon the death of Mr. Kooser, Mr. Ogle went into private practice by himself. He was eventually joined in that practice by Joseph B. Policicchio and C. Gregory Frantz. Mr. Ogle was admitted to the courts of Somerset County, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pa. the Superior and Supreme Courts of Pa. and the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1961 he was appointed United States Commissioner by the District Court, a post he held until 1964 when he resigned to accept an appointment as a special assistant attorney feneral. He was elected district attorney for Somerset County in 1963 and re-elected in 1967. Mr. Ogle was active in community affairs, being the first president of the Somerset Jaycees and a former president of the Somerset Area School Board. He served on the boards of the American Red Cross, Somerset Chamber of Commerce, Children's Aid Society, Somerset Community Hospital and the Municipal Authority of the Somerset Area Schools. He is a lifelong Republican, having served as chairman of the Somerset County Republican Committee and as a representative from Somerset County on the State Republican Committee. He retired from active practice in 1989. In 2002, he was honored by the Somerset County Bar Association for having been a member of that body for 50 years. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. The Rev. Roger Forry officiating.
