Born July 23 1981 in Johnstown, daughter of Barry and Pam (Zerfoss) O'Kinsky, Friedens. Preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Bert Sr. and Marian Zerfoss. Survived by her parents; sister, Elizabeth, and paternal grandparents, Stanley and Ivadene O'Kinsky, Somerset. Also aunts and uncles: David and Bettie Jane Kimmel, Eugene and Kay Miller, Bert Jr. and Judy Zerfoss, and Terry O'Kinksy. Attended Listie Grace Brethren Church. Member of the New Centerville Spinnetts for 15 years and head majorette in 1997 and 1998. Performed with All-American Twirling Performance Team at half-time of the 1998 Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Honor Roll member of Marching Auxiliaries Performance Team. A 1999 graduate of Somerset Area High School. Member of the school chorus for seven years. Member of Somerset Area High School Marching Band, Concert Band, and captain of the danceline. Performed at Disney Magic Music Days along with the high school band in 1998. Received 1992 Presidential Academic Fitness Award. Member of the Jr. National Honor Society, German Club, and Somerset Youth Corps. Melissa worked as a life guard and swim instructor at Somerset YMCA and Camp Albryoca. She was enrolled at Slippery Rock University in elementary education and would have been a member of the Marching Rockets Color Guard. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Listie Grace Brethren Church. Rev. Ron Jarvis officiating.
