Opel, aged 75, died Tuesday afternoon at his home at Mountain View, in Elk Lick Township, of pneumonia. Surviving are his wife and these children: Jacob H., Frostburg, Md.; William H., Warren, Pa.; John, Grantsville, Md.; Eli, Lebanon, Ore.; William, at home; Mrs. Charles Weller, Summit Mills; Anna, Salisbury; Sadie, at home; Mrs. Clyde Newman, Salisbury; Mrs. Irvin Firl, Summit Mills, and Mrs. Sylvester Maust, at home. Surviving brothers and sisters are: Jacob, Somerset; Lewis, Elkins, W.Va.; John, Meyersdale; Peter, residing in Maryland; Mrs. George Krouse, Grantsville, Md.; Anna, Meyersdale, and Dora, Grantsville, Md. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, of which he was a faithful member. Mr. Opel was a citizen of very sterling qualities and highly respected by all who knew him. Meyersdale Republican, March 10, 1932 ------ HENRY J. OPEL Henry J. Opel, son of the late John and Margretta (Becket) Opel, of Grantsville, Md., died at his home in Elk Lick Township on Tuesday, March 8, of pneumonia. Mr. Opel was born in The Cove, Md., on Jan. 24, 1857, and at the time of his death was aged 75 years, 1 month and 14 days. He was a farmer by occupation, having followed farming all of his life. He was a resident of Elk Lick Township for 50 years. His health was much impaired for years. He spent three months in a hospital about seven years ago, at which time he had a foot amputated, due to infection from diabetes. However, he was able to get around and do the chores about his home until a few days before his death. This winter he was gradually failing in health until confined to his bed on Thursday morning, March 3rd, and died the following Tuesday, having developed pneumonia. He bore his affliction very patiently and without complaint. Mr. Opel was married Aug. 28, 1870, to Sevilla Gnagey of near Meyersdale. In Aug. 1929 Mr. and Mrs. Opel celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, at which time all of their children were at home, except one son, who resides in Oregon. To Mr. and Mrs. Opel were born 15 children. Four preceded their father in death, namely: Perry, Lloyd, Ida and Earl (who was killed in Argonne Forest during the World War, and in whose memory the Salisbury-Grantsville American Legion post is named). Mr. Opel is survived by his wife and these children: Jacob H., Frostburg, Md.; Milton, Warren, Ohio; John, Grantsville, Md.; Eli, Lebanon, Oregon; William of Elk Lick Township; Mrs. Charles Weller, Summit Mills; Anna, Salisbury; Sadie, at home; Mrs. Clyde Newman, Salisbury; Mrs. Irvin Firl, Summit Mills; Mrs. Sylvester Maust, at home. He is also survived by these brothers and sisters: Jacob, Somerset; Lewis, Elkins, W.Va.; John A., Summit Mills; Peter, of near Accident, Md.; Mrs. George Krouse and Miss Cora, Grantsville, Md.; Miss Anna, Meyersdale. There are left also forty-two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 11, at 2 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. Jonas B. Miller at the family home, and by Rev. S. D. Sigler in the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mr. Opel was a life-long Lutheran. Interment in the St. Paul church cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, March 17, 1932
