Born in Accident, MD, Oct. 28, 1906, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary (Brenneman) Opel. Formerly employed as a heavy equipment operator for several local coal companies, he was a member of Glade Mennonite Church, Accident, MD. Surviving are his widow, Melda (Schrock) Opel; two sons: Park Opel, Accident, MD; and Don Opel, Grantsville, MD; 11 daughters: Bernice Baker, Erma Stephens, Nora Evans and Jean DeWitt all of Oakland, Eve Miller, Viola Yommer, June Holman and Hazel Maust, all of Accident, MD; Marie Eisentrout, Beaver Dam, Va.; and JoAnn Bender, Kalona, Iowa; 49 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, Md. Services were conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Glade Mennonite Church by the Rev. Oren Bender and the Rev. Carl Opel.
