D. Otto, died about 11 o'clock Sunday, Feb. 18, at her home a few miles north of here, near Springs. She had been in ill health for about ten years, and had been confined to her bed since last May 1st. While her death was not unexpected by her family and close friends, nevertheless news of it came as a shock to others in this and neighboring communities. Mrs. Otto was a woman of exceptional character and had the rare faculty of making her acquaintances her friends. Her first interest was her home and family, and her next, her church. For forty-seven years she had been a faithful and devout member of the Springs Mennonite Church, and even after her health began to fail she never missed a service if she could help it. Mrs. Otto has lived in this section practically all of her life. She was born near Meyersdale, April 9, 1872, a daughter of Jonas and Barbara Maust, natives of that community. She married D. D. Otto forty-seven years ago. Thirty-eight years ago Mr. Otto started the Otto Brick Works, a few miles north of here, and for many years his wife worked side by side with him helping him to build the concern into what it is today. Mr. Otto still continues to manage this business himself, although he has since taken two of his sons, Roy and Walter Otto, into partnership with him. In her passing Mrs. Otto leaves, besides her bereaved husband, one daughter and three sons. They are, Miss Cora Otto, at home, who has cared for her mother with the utmost tenderness and devotion during her long illness, Rev. Roy Otto, pastor of the Springs Mennonite Church, Walter Otto and Lloyd Otto, all of the Springs community. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Jonas Maust, Milford, Ind., Joseph Maust, Pidgeon, Mich., Louis and Joel Maust, near Meyersdale, Simon Maust, Springs, Mrs. Henry Yoder and Mrs. Annie Yoder, Wellman, Iowa, (Barbara) Mrs. Jacob Gnagey, Wauseon, Ohio, and Mary Maust, Meyersdale; a twin sister of the deceased. Two sisters, Mrs. Dan Gnagey and Lydia Maust, and one brother, Noah Maust, have preceded her in death. Funeral services were conducted from her son's church at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, Rev. Isaac Metzler, Bittinger, and Rev. Roy Kinsinger, Grantsville, officiated. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery, under the direction of William Winterberg, local mortician. Pallbearers were Messrs. Edwin Kolb, E. D. Davis, S. W. Bender, J. H. Bender, J. J. Otto and N. S. Maust. Meyersdale Republican, February 22, 1940
