Payne, 86, well known retired Baltimore and Ohio locomotive engineer and resident of Meyersdale for more than 35 years, passed away Tuesday night, May 15, following a heart attack, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Price, of Jenkins, Ky., where he had been visiting for several months. He had been planning to return to his home here about May 24. Up until Sunday before his death he had been enjoying good health for one of his age. W. F. Payne was the son of the late John J. and Eleanor Frances (Fouchee) Payne and was born in Madison Court House, Va. Early in life he became a railroader and as an engineer on the B & O, Connellsville-Cumberland division, he made his home in Meyersdale, though there were several intervals when he moved his family to Hyndman and other towns on the line. He was retired by the B & O, in 1929. Mr. Payne is survived by five children: Mrs. Otis O. Cook, who, with her family, occupy the family home on Meyers Ave., and with whom he lived; Mrs. Elizabeth Sondheim, Baltimore; Mrs. Frank Price, Jenkins, Ky., and Mrs. Ware Deeter, Meyersdale, and by one son, Charles Payne, of Connellsville. His wife passed away about three years ago. One daughter is also deceased. He was a member of the Methodist Church and ranked as one of Meyersdale's most upright, amiable and beloved citizens. His body was brought to Meyersdale on Wednesday evening. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. S. C. Keiser at the O. O. Cook home, at 1:30 Friday afternoon. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Hyndman, under the direction of W. C. Price & Son. Meyersdale Republican, May 17, 1945
