"Jack", Jr. 08/12/08 Daily American John T. "Jack" Pence Jr., 83, Somerset, passed on August 10, 2008, at home. Born November 13, 1924, in Mount Pleasant, the son of the late John T. Pence Sr. and Josephine (Hudek) Pence. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Edward and Melvin Pence; and sister, Dorothy Bair. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Darlene (Bair) Pence; daughters, Linda Volpe and husband, Vernon, Beaver Falls; Jackie Gush, Somerset; and Cindy Ash and husband, Tim, Somerset; son, John T. Pence III, Somerset; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Louise Ludwig, Mount Pleasant; and brother, Richard Pence, Elyria, Ohio. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the battleship USS Indiana, as a quartermaster second class. He was awarded both a Bronze and Silver Star among other decorations, as the Indiana participated in every major battle during the island hopping campaign in the Pacific, which ultimately led to the end of World War II. He was a member of the Somerset VFW Post 554 and the Somerset American Legion, Post 181. He was a retired employee of the Uptegraff Transformer Co. of Scottdale and Somerset as well as The Revco Co. in Somerset. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 23 at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. The Rev. Daniel O'Neill officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Full military rites accorded by the Somerset County Honor Guard. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Tanaya Nayak, "In Touch" Hospice, Interim Health Care for Veterans Administration services.
