Pfahler died at his home on Salisbury Street, Monday at 3:20 a.m., after a long illness. He was born in Meyersdale, Sept. 12, 1883, the son of John H. and Elmira (Deal) Pfahler, and was aged 65 years, two months and 24 days at his death. Mr. Pfahler was a prominent merchant in Meyersdale for many years, having succeeded his father as proprietor of the Pfahler grocery and dry goods store, located in the two story building, corner of Center and Dale, now the Community Building. In recent years, he conducted a grocery store in his home on Beachley Street and later on Salisbury Street, continuing to wait on his neighborhood customers despite ill health until recently. Mr. Pfahler was an alumni of Gettysburg College, a Royal Arch Mason and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Carrie Danneker Pfahler, and the following children: Ralph R., Tampa, Fla.; the Rev. John H. Pfahler, Pittsburgh; George D., Frostburg, Md.; Mrs. Charles M. McIntosh, Indiana, Pa., and Carolyn, Memphis, Tenn.; also by one brother, Karl E. Pfahler of Hoquam, Wash., one sister, Mrs. C. D. Valentine of Cumberland, Md., and two grandchildren. His body lay in state at the Price Funeral Home where many friends called to pay their last respects, and was taken to the Lutheran church at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 by the pastor, the Rev. H. K. Hilner. The Springs Mennonite mixed choir sang two beautiful numbers. The Rev. Mr. Hilner in his discourse spoke of Mr. Pfahler as a devoted husband, father, friend and church member. For many years Mr. Pfahler was a member of the church council and took an active part in Sunday school work of Zion Lutheran Church. Pall bearers were John H. Blocher, S. Frank Miller, Edgar Gnagey, Leonard Engle, Harry LaRue and Carl Johnson. Interment was made in Union Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, December 9, 1948
