All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ FRANK PHENICIE Passing of Oldest Pioneer Resident of Garrett Boro Frank Phenicie, oldest continuous resident of Garrett, passed away at his home on Saturday, June 16, at 10:25 p.m. after two weeks serious illness. He was born at Scalp Level, Jan. 7, 1866, a son of Eli and Emma (Meyers) Phenicie, and spent all but the first four of his 79 years in the town of Garrett which was in the incipiency of its history when his parents located there. During his long lifetime he followed various vocations - farming, hotel keeping and coal mining - and occupied a prominent position in the life of the community. Nearly 60 years ago he married Anna Mary Hoos, who was his loving and faithful companion until she passed away nearly three years ago. His health had been failing ever since he lost her companionship. Ten children were born to this estimable couple of whom seven survive, namely, Lee, of Garrett; Harry, California, Pa.; Mrs. J. T. Byrne, Baltimore; Mrs. H. L. Rauch, Orlando, Fla.; Mrs. J. T. Parr, Baltimore; Clay, Garrett; and Anna, at home. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is survived also by one sister, Mrs. Grant Gallagher of Somerset, and one brother, John Phenicie of Garrett. Mr. Phenicie was a kind and genial dispositioned man and had a host of friends. He was for many years a member of the Church of the Brethren and in politics was a staunch Republican. Funeral services were conducted at his home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. A. J. Replogle. Interment took place in Fairview Cemetery, under direction of Johnson & Son, Berlin morticians. Meyersdale Republican, June 21, 1945
