Born Sept. 9, 1876, in Frostburg, Md., he was a son of James and Lucy (Jenkins) Phillips. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Nevada Dickens, in Dec. 1929; also three brothers, Walter, Milton and Howard, and two sisters, Fannie and Olive. Surviving are four sons, James D., Pleasant Hills, Pittsburgh; Dr. John R., Tucson, Ariz.; J. Bruce, Meyersdale; and Dr. William A. Phillips, Yuma, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a twin brother, Harry Phillips, of Tucson, Ariz. He had been married to the former Gertrude Lintz, Meyersdale. Mr. Phillips was a member of United Methodist Church here and Meyersdale Rotary Club. At the age of 14, he drove mule in Shaw Mines. He was active in the early mercantile development of Meyersdale, having clerked in Truxall's store at an early age. In 1897 he became associated with W. H. Habel in a grocery enterprise, which grew to be the largest of its kind in Somerset County, utilizing seven mule teams for delivery as far away as Accident, Md. In 1920 he opened his own feed business here. Other business ventures included his association with Niverton Coal Co., Blackfield Coal Company and with W. E. Gnagey in coal mining at Goodtown. He also owned farms at Sand Patch, on Meyersdale RD 3 and at Brush Creek and was a long time distributor of Somerset County maple syrup. Mr. Phillips retired from business at 75 years of age, but remained active until age 90. Friends are being received at Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, where funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, with Rev. Paul Snyder officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery, Meyersdale.
