Phillips, a former resident of Meyersdale, died in Fairmont, West Virginia, at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon, July 20, at her home on Fifth Street. She had been seriously ill for six months. Her death is deeply mourned by a large circle of friends. A memorial service was held in the First Methodist Church, and conducted by her pastor, Dr. Denver C. Pickens. Her body lay in state, where a large number of people gathered to pay respect to her memory. A great bank of flowers occupied the front of the church, which was a fitting tribute to an admirable life of useful service and kindness. The pastor in simple statements told of her long and helpful relation to the church and, in particular of her help directed to him, and the fine association with her in his work. The body was brought to Meyersdale the next day, July 23, and met at the cemetery by Meyersdale friends, where a simple burial service was performed and she was interred beside her father, James Phillips. With the Phillips family Fannie moved to Fairmont about thirty years ago, where she has resided since and had been a highly esteemed member of the community. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. James Phillips, and sister, Olive M. Phillips of Fairmont, and four brothers, Milton J. Phillips, of Wilkinsburg, Howard and Charles Phillips, of Meyersdale, and Harry C. Phillips, of Vandergrift, Pa. Miss Phillips was financial secretary of the First Methodist Church, of her city, and was active in many church enterprises. Since her death many persons called at the bereaved home to express their sympathy to the family and their appreciation of her example, as a devoted daughter and sister and as a kind neighbor and loyal friend. Funeral services were conducted by R. C. Jones, of Fairmont. The family wishes to take this occasion to express their heart-felt appreciation of the kind friends, who came to the home and ministered in every way possible for the comfort and help to those remaining. Such expressions of generosity and sympathy were the best of tributes that could be given for one they loved and for those they continue to love. Meyersdale Republican, July 25, 1940
