(ADDIE) PHILSON Mrs. S. B. Philson Aged 81, Expires Was a Resident of Meyersdale Since 1882 Death came to Mrs. S. B. Philson, one of Meyersdale's best known and beloved ladies, after an illness of five days following a heart attack, at 2:35 Friday afternoon, Jan. 15, 1943, at her home next to the Citizen's National Bank on Center Street, where she and her husband have resided for the past 60 years. Save for a few periods of illness in recent years, Mrs. Philson led an active life in her home and maintained her interest in the affairs of the community until her last illness and death at the good age of 81 years, 8 months and 28 days. She was born in Berlin, Pa., April 17, 1861, the daughter of John G. and Hanna (Guss) Gardill. In 1880 Addie Gardill married Samuel B. Philson, then a young man entering the banking business, the profession of his grandfather, father and other members of the Philson family in Berlin. Two years later the young couple moved to Meyersdale where Mr. Philson took charge of the bank already established here by his father, Samuel R. Philson, and as head of which he has continued ever since. Mrs. Philson entered the social life of the then growing town of Meyersdale, and connected with the Lutheran Church where she became an active member. She was a charter member of the missionary society and for many years was head of the primary department of the Sunday School. Throughout life her cheerful friendliness brought to her a host of friends. Her front porch, centrally located as it is, was always the meeting place of groups and friendly gatherings, and through the years when Mrs. Philson sat upon her porch she had a friendly greeting for all passers by. One son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Philson, Robert Harry, who when he grew to manhood, also entered the banking business with his father. Beside her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Philson is survived by three grandchildren, namely, Samuel R. Philson, Beacon, N.Y., Margaret, wife of J. Warren Shaver, Johnstown, and Rebecca, wife of James McClure, and by three great-grandchildren. Also one sister survives, Mrs. Annie M. Brubaker, Berlin, and one brother, James D. Gardill, Philadelphia. Word of the death of another sister, Mrs. Ellen Ehmen of Sunnyside, Wash., was received at the Philson home the day before Mrs. Philson passed away. Funeral services were conducted at the Philson home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock by her pastor, Rev. R. M. Dunkelberger of Zion Lutheran Church. Burial was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Berlin, directed by W. C. Price & Son. Among those who attended the obsequies were Samuel R. Philson, Beacon, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Shayer, Johnstown, Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Rowe, Philadelphia, and other nieces and nephews from Berlin and Pittsburgh. Meyersdale Republican, January 21, 1943
