Piatt, 76, of Somerset, passed on Jan. 15, 2004, after a courageous battle against mesothelioma. Born March 20, 1927, in Mingo Junction, Ohio, he is the son of Walter Franklin Piatt and Katheryn (Kennedy) Piatt Buris. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mrs. Walter (Rita) Pigora. He is survived by his wife, the former Willeta Powers to whom he was married for 50 years, children Rev. Monica Hamilton of New Wilmington; Sheila Ulerich, married to Dan of Somerset; Bernadette Barrett of Curwensville; Mary Piatt-Bruner, married to Duane Bruner, of Somerset; and LTC Walter E. Piatt Jr., married to the former Cynthia Walmsley of Wahiawa, Hawaii; grandchildren: Michael Kalmbach, Danny Routch, Samuel Hamilton, Jerry Barrett, Anna Bruner and Jessica and Joshua Piatt. He is the brother of Mrs. Eugene (Margaret) Glazer of N. Versailles, Mrs. Mary Scott of Braddock, Mrs. Lou (Jane) Neckerman of Baldwin, and Mrs. Jean Van Kirk of Steubenville, Ohio. He attended St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Peter's Seniors, and volunteered at St. Peter's School. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a retired foreman with the U.S. Steel Edgar Thompson Works with 30 years of experience. He was an active volunteer and referee for the Somerset County High School Volleyball program for 28 years and was a volleyball coach at both the Jr. High and Sr. High levels at Somerset Area Schools for the past 14 years. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coach's Hall of Fame in 2000. He was a Pennsylvania Senior Olympian for the past 21 years and received numerous medals in race walking, volleyball, and track and field. He represented Pennsylvania as a senior athlete in five National Senior Games. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and a true and good friend. He embraced and cherished the joys of life. He will be deeply grieved and forever missed. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Church, Monsignor Samuel Tomaselli Celebrant. Interment will be at Somerset County Memorial Park with full military honors by the Somerset County Honor Guard. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
