Picking, Jr., well-known Somerset druggist, died suddenly on Friday, Feb. 20, at Palm Beach, Fla. He was returning from a fishing trip with his friend and fellow townsman, Dr. William R. Dougan, when he was stricken with a heart attack in Dr. Dougan's car, and died instantly. Mr. Picking had suffered a heart attack last November and following six weeks in the Somerset Hospital, had gone to Florida on the advice of his physician. He seemed to be recovering satisfactorily. In addition, he operated a stone quarry in Jefferson Township, and was president of the Crown Mutual Fire Insurance Company and of the Pennsylvania Propane Gas Company. He was a Mason, a Shriner, a charter member of the Somerset Fraternal Order of Eagles, a member of the Rotary Club, Odd Fellows, Somerset Country Club and of the official board of the First Christian Church. He was a life-long Democrat and active in party affairs. Mr. Picking is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruey F. (Boyd) Picking; two sons, Jay Wilford Picking of Chagrin Falls, O., and Robert Boyd Picking of Chicago; two grandchildren, two brothers, H. M. Picking, Sr., of Johnstown and Joseph I. Picking of Somerset, and two sisters, Miss Florence Picking and Mrs. Marian P. Grove of Somerset. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the First Christian Church, followed by burial in the Husband Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Virgil Wallace of Berwick, Christian church evangelist and close friend of the family, conducted the services assisted by Rev. J. F. Messenger. The body lay in state from 11 a.m. until the hour of the funeral services, previous to which friends were received at the Walter S. Hoffman funeral home. Meyersdale Republican, February 26, 1948
