Foster Bittinger, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, conducted funeral services Thursday morning, Dec. 4, for Charles Platter, who died Tuesday morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Butler, near here. The services were held from the Laughlin school house and interment was in a nearby cemetery. Mr. Platter was aged seventy-one years, nine months and twelve days. Born at Grantsville, Feb. 20, 1870, he was a son of Henry and Rachel Bittinger Platter. His entire life had been spent in this section where he engaged in farming. Since the death of his wife, the former Jane Durst, of McHenry, about a year ago, he had been residing with his children. Of the twelve children born of his marriage, eight survive. They are, Mrs. Earl Resh, Mrs. Jefferson Durst, Elroy Platter, Silas Platter, Joseph Platter and Irvin Platter, all of Grantsville, Mrs. Freeman Butler and Orvis Platter, near Salisbury. Also surviving are forty-seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Jesse Wilt, Salisbury, Mrs. Joseph Bittinger, Uniontown, and Mrs. Thomas Wilt, Swanton, and four brothers, Silas Platter, Wellsburg, Pa., Henry, Jacob and Thomas Platter, Grantsville.
