Popa, 84, Rockwood (Trent), died March 14, 2005, at his residence. Born Dec. 28, 1920, in Alliance, Ohio, he is the son of the late Paul and Rose (Sarvi) Popa. Also preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Price. Survived by his wife, the former Teresa Pater, nieces, Mrs. Ed (Marion) Kollar, Jefferson; Mrs. Tom (Joyce) Carter, Pleasent Hills; and Mrs. Sandra Brooks and family, Glassport; nephews, Richard Sovich and family, Glassport, and Andrew Sovich and family, Bellevernon. Also a special sister-in-law, Clara Sovich, Clairton. Member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Past president of the Pittsburgh Diocesan Union; former secretary of the Pa. Association of the Holy Name Society and was appointed chairman of the National Association of the Holy Name Society Anti-Pornography Committee in 1981. A member of the Pennsylvania State Holy Name Speaker's Bureau and helped organize the Somerset County Citizens for Decency. He was retired from the Department of the Army in 1980 as a logistical specialist in Civil Service and held the appointment of Equal Opportunity Counselor at the U.S. Army Element in Oakdale. He served 38 months in the U.S. Army during World War II, 24 of which were overseas. He is a member of the American Legion, VFW and a life member of the DAV. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was past president of the Somerset County American Association of Retired Persons. He belonged to the National Ambassador Club lifetime member and recipient of the National Medallion Circle Award which is presented to honor spiritual directors, moderators and Lay member of the Holy Name Society. He was a Hospice volunteer for Somerset Hospital and also wrote several articles for the Daily American. Friends received 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home, Somerset. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Peter's Catholic Church. The Rev. Monsignor Samuel J. Tomaselli, celebrant. Committal in Somerset County Memorial Park. A wake service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Somerset "In Touch" Hospice, 1590 N.
