He was the son of the late Dorothy Fisher and Phillip Pope and was born February 22, 1854, at Wright's Crossing, near Frostburg. Mr. Pope moved to Garrett County at the age of eight years and resided on the same farm till his death. He married Miss Elizabeth Bonig of Grantsville, who passed away several years ago. Five children were born to this union: Harry Pope, Grantsville; Mrs. Jesse Merrill, Avilton; Mrs. Cecil Michael and Mrs. Orville Crowe, both of Frostburg; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Pope was the last surviving member of his family, and was a member of the Grantsville Lutheran Church for 82 years. Funeral services were held in Mt. Zion Methodist Church, Monday afternoon. Rev. George Bowersox, assisted by Rev. Charles Sisk, officiated. The pall bearers were grandsons of the deceased patriarch - Glenn Durst, Robert and William Merrill, Kenneth Crowe, Scott and Harry Pope.
