Powell Jr., 83, of Alexandria, Va., died June 21, 1987, in Alexandria Hospital. Born in Fayetteville, N.C., Jan. 1, 1904, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Powell Sr. A retired Air Force major general and former chief medical officer at NATO headquarters in Europe, Powell graduated from Wake Forest College and received a medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1927. He was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps in 1929. He served in various capacities in both the Army and Air Force. In 1951 he was named surgeon of U.S. Air Forces in Europe at Wiesbaden, West Germany. He retired in 1960. He was a member of the Radiological Society of America and Grace Reformed Church, Washington. Surviving are his widow, Harriet (Stanton) Powell, a native of Grantsville, Md.; and one sister, Mrs. Louise Varnedoe, Fayetteville. Services were conducted Wednesday in the Fort Meyer Chapel. Full graveside military rites and interment was in Arlington National Cemetery. The Republic, July 2, 1987 [P0877]
