Putman, 94, 1009 Wineva Lane, Windber, formerly of Gettysburg, died April 29, 1993 at the Church of the Brethren Home, Windber. He was named for the evangelist Dwight Moody. Born Sept. 3, 1898 in Trent, Somerset County. Son of the late Will and Carrie (Shaulis) Putman. Preceded in death by a sister Floy Werner. Survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Agnes Kelly and these children: Dwight F. married to the former Ann E. Cunningham, Somerset; Kathryn, wife of J. Michael Bishop, Belvedere, Calif., and Carolyn Hall of Mill Valley, Calif. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Sister of Frieda Walker of Somerset. He went to Gettysburg Academy in 1912 and then Gettysburg College graduating in 1920 with a bachelor of arts degree. He then attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg College graduating in 1920 with a bachelor of arts degree. He then attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg receiving the degree of Bachelor of Divinity in 1923. The same year he earned a Master of Arts Degree from Gettysburg College. He was ordained in 1924 by the Allegheny Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America. The first parish he served was Graeff Lutheran Church, Cairnbrook from 1924-26. In June 1927 he was called to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hudson Heights, N.J. During this pastorate he also attended Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University and New York University. In 1930 he accepted a call to Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, which he served until 1948. In 1948, the Central Pennsylvania Synod of the ULCA elected him as its president, which he served until his retirement in 1966. During his 18 years at Christ Church, Gettysburg, Dwight Putman was very active in the community and instrumental in the formation of the Adams County Child Welfare board. He was involved in the community's youth center and served on the board of the Adams County Welfare Council. He also worked toward better race and labor relations. He served on the National Council of Churches and for a time was president of the Pennsylvania Council of Churches. His leadership was recognized by Gettysburg College when they presented him with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree and by Muhlenberg College with an honorary Doctor of Law. Memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Scalp Level, Rev. Brian W. Armen, Rev. Dr. Gerald E. Miller, Bishop of the Allegheny Synod of the ELCA.
