Richard Pyle Killed in Action While Serving as Radioman in Sicily Private Richard Pyle, 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Pyle of Rockwood was killed in action in Sicily, August 7, according to a telegram from the war department received by his parents last Friday evening. Surviving are his parents, Walter and Gladys Brant Pyle and a brother Homer, 16, all of Rockwood. His mother received a letter only a few days previous to the notice of his death, from her son, telling that he had been sent with the invasion army into Sicily and at the time of writing he was in excellent health. The young soldier would have been in service one year had he lived until September 2. He was a radio operator in the infantry, and stated in one letter, that he did all the radio operating for his company. A graduate of Rockwood High School, class of 1940, he worked in the Acme Market in his home town, until called into service. About March 1, 1943 he was sent overseas, being stationed in North Africa, until the invasion of Europe began, when he was sent with his company to Sicily. His father is a veteran of World War I, but did not serve overseas. His company was ready to sail at the time the Armistice was signed, November 11, 1918. Meyersdale Republican, September 9, 1943
