Leonard J. Ramsey, aged 60, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Painesville, Ohio, since January 1943, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at 10 a.m. June 7, at his home in the manse, 21 E. Washington St. Ill for several days he had continued his work delivering the sermon at the morning worship hour Sunday at his Church. Rev. Mr. Ramsey instituted the week day religious education program in Painesville which functioned successfully in that area for some time. He was one of the five men who organized the Akron-Ashtabula summer camp for young people. This $40,000 project, on a site on Lake Erie at Conneaut, was started two years ago and still is in the process of completion. It was used for summer camping for the first time last year. A native of South Carolina, Rev. Ramsey attended Dorland Institute, Hot Springs, N.C., Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn., and Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn., from which he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then studied at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, where he earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree. Several years of graduate work followed, including studies at University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University and other institutions. He held three pastorates before coming to Painesville, having served in Pittsburgh, Pa., for seven years, New Philadelphia, O., eight years, and most recently Mount Vernon, seven years. He is past president of both the Pennsylvania and Ohio Pastors conferences, and now is a trustee of the Ohio Baptist Convention. He also has served on the faculty of the Young Peoples' Summer Assembly. Mrs. Ramsey is the former Miss Etha Younkin, daughter of J. C. Younkin of Confluence. She and Rev. Mr. Ramsey were married in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1924. Besides his academic education, Rev. Mr. Ramsey had a brilliant musical background, and his entire family is gifted and well-educated in this line. He was an accomplished pianist and was highly-trained also in voice. He modestly used his talents mainly for the enjoyment of himself and his family. Surviving him besides his wife are three sons, William J., Painesville, Richard J. and Donald Roger at home, and three brothers, Claude, Crowl and Milton, all of South Carolina.
