Rankin, M.D., 76, of Bethel Park, died Aug. 27, 2000, at home of an apparent heart attack. He was born May 30, 1924, in Vestaburg, Pa. He was the son of the late James and Edna Staley Rankin. He married Helen Speicher on Nov. 11, 1945; they had five children; the two surviving sons include James D. (wife Marlene E.) and Jeffrey A. (wife Annette L.) Also surviving are three grandchildren, Jeffrey T., James T. and Jennifer L.; a sister, Naomi Cherup (husband Dr. E. David Cherup) and brother Dr. S. Glenn Rankin (wife Virginia M.) He was especially devoted to his wife, sons, grandchildren, sister, and brother and his late parents. Despite having infantile diabetes, known since age 11, he graduated valedictorian from East Bethel High School in 1942, Waynesburg College in 1945 and the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1949. He pursued family medicine in Rockwood from 1950 to 1956, until for health reasons, he joined the family practice of his brother-in-law, Dr. E. David Cherup in Bethel Park. His brother Dr. S. Glenn Rankin joined the practice later. He practiced with them until 1960, when he decided to specialize as an Otolaryngologist (ENT) physician. He practiced with the late Dr. George Schlen, the late Dr. Robert Schlen and Dr. Joel Schwartz, before retiring in 1982 for health reasons. During his lifetime, he was President of Somerset County Medical Society, a Rockwood School Director, Assistant Clinical Medical Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, a Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, a member of the Allegheny Medical Society and a member of the Pennsylvania State Otolaryngologist Society. Although he missed practicing medicine and the interactions with his patients, he was able to live an active retirement enjoying golfing and working on his computer. He had a strong will to live and support his wife and family. He will be deeply missed by all those who were close to him. Arrangements by Paul L. Henney Memorial Chapel Inc., 5570 Library Rd., Bethel Park. Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, Christ United Methodist Church on Highland Rd., Bethel Park.
