Jr. 10/31/07 Daily American John O. Ream Jr., 89, Berlin, died Oct. 28, 2007, at Meadow View Nursing Center. He was born in Berlin on Nov. 9, 1917, the son of the late John O. Ream, Sr. and Zella B. (Wetmiller) Ream. Preceding John in death are brothers, Dr. Norman B. Ream and Joseph M. Ream. Surviving are his brother, Frank C. Ream, Berlin, and sister, Mary R. Kretchman, Meyersdale. Also surviving is his wife of 60 years, the former C. Louise McAlpine, and their two children, Deborah R. Burk and husband, the Rev. Dr. John K. Burk, Baltimore; and John O. Ream III and wife, Diane (Shane) Ream, Erie. Other survivors are his grandchildren, Samuel E. Burk and wife, Rebecca; Jacob E. and Eliza N. Burk, Baltimore; John O. Ream, IV, Oakland, Calif.; Joanna L. Ream, Erie; and Kelly M. Ream, Philadelphia. Mr. Ream was graduated from Berlin High School and attended Gettysburg College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and then worked at Philson Bank before becoming U.S. Postmaster in Berlin, where he served for 26 years. John served on the Somerset County Council of Aging and volunteered as a counselor at the Somerset State Hospital. He was also involved with the Berlin and Somerset County Historical Societies. A life long member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Berlin, John served in many capacities including church council, call committees, youth group adviser, Sunday school teacher and organizer of the needlepoint parament and Chrismon groups. He gave leadership to the larger Lutheran church and served on synod council, social concerns committee, seminary preparation committee and also volunteered as a consultant for Tressler Lutheran Services. Mr. Ream represented the Central Pa. Synod at several national church conventions. Family and friends will be received for one hour prior to the memorial service, which will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Berlin. Interment will be at Berlin IOOF Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. John Harmon officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 525 Main St., Berlin, PA 15530. Arrangements entrusted to Auer Memorial Home & Cremation Services, Harrisburg.
