After taking treatment from doctors in Grantsville and Accident, Md., without securing relief, he went to the Frantz Hospital as a last resort. By this time blood poison had developed to such an extent that Dr. C. W. Franz decided that nothing short of the amputation of the infected arm could save his life. Accordingly the arm was amputated on Friday, Nov. 11, but he died on the following day. Bernard D. Riley was born in Friendsville, Md., March 21, 1892, and died at the age of 40 years, 7 months and 21 days. In 1917 he was united in marriage with Anna M. Spiker, who survives, together with their six children - Claude, Randall, Grace, Paul and Walter. He is also survived by his father, Dial Riley, and a brother, Ed Riley, both residing on Winding Ridge. Bernard Riley was a prosperous farmer and a man of whom naught but good could be said. His untimely death is not only lamented by his immediate family, but by the entire community in which he lived, and a wide circle of friends. He suffered from his infected arm, but bore his affliction very patiently. Funeral services were held in the Cove English Lutheran Church, Rev. Arthur Scrogum, assisted by Rev. A. C. Harper, officiating. Meyersdale Republican, November 24, 1932
