Rittenhour, 93, Vernon, Vt., a former resident of Holton Home, died March 18, 2008, at Vernon Green Nursing Home in the Special Care Unit following a period of declining health. Born June 15, 1914, in Bucyrus, Ohio, daughter of Lloyd and Clara (Beach) Smith. Preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Wilhelm Critchfield, who died Nov. 9, 2007; and a brother Ellwood Smith. On Aug. 30, 1933, in Newport, Ky., she was married to Lloyd Rittenhour who preceded her in death in August of 1984. Survived by two sons, Ronald Rittenhour and wife, Pat, Barberton, Ohio; and James Rittenhour and wife, Debbie, Vernon; son-in-law, Robert Critchfield, Barberton; eight grandchildren, Melanie McGuire, Karla Markhayze, Kimberly Glab, Mark Rittenhour, Matthew Rittenhour, Michael Rittenhour, Jason Rittenhour and Adam Rittenhour. Additionally she leaves 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was raised and educated in Bucyrus and while in Ohio had been employed as a sales associate for the J C Penney Co. Mrs. Rittenhour had been a former resident of Somerset, where she was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and an active member of the church's altar guild. She had also resided in Keuka Park, N.Y., and Port Charlotte, Fla. A devoted and faithful wife and loving mother, her life centered around her family. Her grandchildren were the "apple of her eye." Corinne loved to play the organ and found much joy in her practice sessions especially when her grandchildren were visiting. She was an avid bridge player and was always ready for a few hands of canasta with whoever was willing to play. Reading and the most complicated crossword puzzle books were her passion. As a wonderful homemaker and mother, she enjoyed cooking and gardening. She especially loved Vermont and its beautiful mountains, flowers, trees and wildlife. It so reminded her of her years in Pennsylvania. On many afternoon rides, "Oh My," she often said of the sights as she traveled along the back roads of Vermont... often commenting, "I've never seen anything like that." A private funeral services will be conducted Tuesday in Somerset, with burial in the family lot in Somerset County Memorial Park.
