Charles David Roan passed away on June 11, 2004, Fort Benning, Ga., after a brief illness. He was married to the former Dawn Marie Bush, daughter of Donna and Thomas Fridy, Somerset. He is survived by his loving wife and his children Jennifer and David. Roan was a Distinguished Military Graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management in 1981. He was subsequently commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery, and assigned to Camp Stanley Korea where he served as both a Fire Support Team Chief and a Battery Fire Direction Officer with the 1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery and 2nd Infantry Division. After re-deploying from Korea in 1982, LTC Roan was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division where he served as Battery Executive Officer, Battalion S4, and Battalion Assistant S3 all with the 1st Battalion 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment. During this assignment, LTC Roan deployed to Grenada as part of Operation Urgent Fury. In 1997, he was assigned to the 4th Battalion 3rd Field Artillery in Garlstedt, Germany where he served as Battalion S4, Battalion Fire Support Officer and subsequently as Commander of B Battery, 4th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery. After battery command, LTC Roan was assigned to the Joint Readiness Training Center where he served as a Fire Support Observer Controller for three years. In 1994, LTC Roan moved to the Pentagon where he served as an Operations Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations & Plans (DCSOPS), Headquarters U.S. Army. In 1996 after graduation of the Command and General Staff College, LTC Roan was again assigned to Fort Bragg, where he served as the G3 of the XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery and as the S3 of the 18th Field Artillery Brigade (Airborne). In 1997, LTC Roan moved to 1st Battalion 321st Field Artillery where he served as the Battalion Executive Officer. In 1998, he was assigned to Warner Robbins Air Force Base where he was a Deputy Mission Crew Commander on JSTARS where he deployed to Kosovo. LTC Roan also served at Fort Benning in the U.S. Army Infantry School and Center since 2000. He then served as the Chief of Training and Doctrine and the Chief of Operations with Directorate of Training/G3, and most recently as the Chief of Battle Command in the Soldier Battle Lab. Roan's military schooling includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms Service Staff School and the Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), the Army Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Army Achievement Medal (2 awards), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kosovo Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Master Parachutist Badge. Interment will be Aug. 12, 2004, at Arlington National Cemetery at 9 a.m. 07/23/2004 Daily American
