One of the most outstanding class members failed to answer to her name when the diplomas were presented to the others. Death, the grim reaper, was responsible, for just an hour before the start of the exercises, Janet Romesberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Romesberg of Garrett, and a member of the class of '31, passed in the great beyond. This is the third time that this class has been saddened by the passing of one of its members. The other occasions were the death of Joe D'Este and Helen Poorbaugh, whose names death took from the class roll and added to his own, several years ago. It was with heavy hearts that the members of the class preceded with the exercises, for Janet was one of the most loved on the roll. Throughout the year, up until the start of her final illness on May 18th, she had been an outstanding and hard working student. She stood high in her class and had the friendship and respect of all teachers and students, and, in fact, of everyone who knew her. Her plans were to go on to college and complete her education. She had made Juniata College the school of her choice. Death however, thwarted her plans, and the diploma, which she would have received in the company of other members of her class, rests with her in her casket. Her death, which came at sunset last Friday evening, was the result of a complication of ailments, the result of a form of rheumatism with which she was afflicted from February, 1923 until the time of her death. Janet's attendance at school was doubtless a trial to her, but she always bore it cheerfully, even though her affliction had left her handicapped by lameness. She was never to be seen without a smile, and she never complained of her affliction. Her class paid its last respects to her at her funeral, which was held last Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Lutheran Church at Garrett. About sixty of its members attended. The others were either out of reach or unable to attend on account of work. A guard of honor from the class marched by the hearse and the others preceded it to the church. The pastor of the Garrett Evangelical Church had charge of the services, and was assisted by Rev. Raly of Berlin, who also sang two very beautiful solos. Floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. The church was filled with sympathizers who also had come to pay their last respects. Burial arrangements were in the hands of Undertaker Price, of Meyersdale. Interment was made in the Garrett Cemetery. Janet Elmira Romesberg was born September 16, 1910, in Garrett, and died May 29, 1931, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Romesberg of Garrett. Other members of her immediate family are John, Robert, Scott, Norman, Jr., and Elizabeth Romesberg at home, and one other sister, Agnes, in Somerset. Emma, Edward, Howard and David died in infancy. She entered school at the age of six. At the age of thirteen she was stricken with rheumatism, with which she was ailing until her death. Due to her ailment, her studies were often discontinued and it was only because she persevered that she finished her high school education. Although her family, her class and her many friends mourn her departure, there is no one who can say that Janet Romesberg did not attend a far greater and better commencement last Friday night than did her bereaved classmates.
