Ross, 82, Berlin, died in the Somerset Community Hospital early Tuesday morning after an illness of about a week, brought on by the unpleasant experience of having his pocket picked by a supposed customer in his shoe repair shop about 10 days ago. He was robbed of his purse and savings of about $65 by a woman who got away in a car bearing an out-of-state license. He had been a shoe repair man in Berlin for 32 years. He was born in Berlin Oct. 20, 1865, a son of Jacob and Amanda (Kibner) Ross. His ancestry can be traced back to Rosses of the Revolutionary period, including George, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Betsy, who made the first flag. He worked as a coal miner in Brothersvalley for 27 years, and after being injured in a mine accident he took up the shoe repair trade. In 1940 he built a new shop with his own hands. The following children survive: Mrs. Alex Fisher, Berlin; Mrs. George Smith, Somerset; Mrs. Dwight Rodgers, Baltimore; Mrs. Lewis McKay, Oneida, N.Y.; Freeman Ross, Peoria, Ill.; Ralph E. Ross, Akron, O.; Oletta G. Ross, at home; Donald V. Ross, Somerset and three stepchildren, W. S. Cable and Mrs. C. R. Lape, Akron, O., and Clarence C. Cable, Peoria, Ill. Funeral services were held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Johnson and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert S. Nagle officiating. Burial in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Berlin.
