Dr. Rowland is said to have been greatly overworked at caring for influenza patients in the town and vicinity where she was located, and where the dreaded disease has been very prevalent for some time. She was taken to a hospital there, Christmas Day, and died there of pneumonia Jan. 1, 1941, greatly lamented by many patrons and friends. She was born in Lanark, Ill., Dec. 31, 1883, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Rowland, and with them located in Sunnyside, Feb. 8, 1908. Soon afterward she went to Evanston, Ill., where she became a student at Northwestern University and later attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Medical Department of the University of Chicago, from which she was graduated, and then took her internship at Memorial Hospital, Worchester, Mass. In 1915 Dr. Rowland went to Yakima, Wash., where she practiced her profession a year and a half and in 1917 located in Sunnyside, where she practiced until she contracted the illness which was fatal to her. She was a member of the Yakima County Medical Society, of the Sunnyside Chapter of Eastern Star, of the Business Women's Club of Sunnyside, of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Church of the Brethren. She also had been health officer, member of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and was active in civic work in various ways. Her mother before her marriage was Miss Sarah Lichty, second daughter of the late Samuel J. and Catherine (Miller) Lichty of Salisbury, Pa. Dr. Rowland is survived by a sister, Mrs. Grace Speck, and a brother, Earl Rowland, both of Sunnyside. A younger brother, Dr. S. J. Rowland, of Yakima, preceded her in death 12 years ago. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 3rd, at the Haskin Funeral Home in Sunnyside conducted by the Rev. Earl Reed. Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, January 23, 1941
