He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Shaffer, who removed from Berlin to Somerset many years ago. Mr. Shaffer engaged in the livery business here, and when the war broke out he enlisted as a wagonmaster. He returned home to vote for Lincoln in 1864, when on account of ill health, he did not return to the front. Later he embarked in the grocery business and still later in the hotel business. About fifteen years ago he removed to Johnstown where he secured employment in the Barbed Wire Mill. He was injured while at work in the mill, and had not been able to work since. Deceased is survived by his wife, one son and five daughters. He is also survived by one brother, John H., of Somerset, and by three sisters, viz: Mrs. Jacob C. Horner, of Johnstown, and Misses Christie and Elizabeth, of Somerset.
