Samuel, 87, Silver Bay, Minn., died June 28, 2008, at his home. Art was born Nov. 18, 1920, to Joseph and Leora (Baughman) in Berlin, where he grew up. He completed high school in Boswell in 1938. He is survived by Kathryn, his wife of 56 years; daughter, Marcia (Jim) Oates, Brighton, Mich.; son, David (Jill Brethauer) Gibsonia; and grandson, Matthew (Haley) Oates, Carbondale, Colo. His college studies were interrupted by World War II during which he served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He returned to Purdue University after the war, and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in 1947. On June 7, 1952, he married Kathryn Peters in Harrisburg. In 1956, Art and Kathryn moved to Silver Bay, where Art joined Reserve Mining Company as assistant to the vice president and controller. In 1961, he was appointed administrative assistant to the president for special studies and, as patent engineer, handled all patent affairs for the company. In 1965, he became assistant manager, Research and Development, a position he held until he was promoted to manager of the division in 1975. Art retired from Reserve Mining in 1984. Art was a devoted son, husband and father who delighted in his children's accomplishments. He enjoyed reading suspense novels, doing yard work, making cross-country car trips, and extolling the many virtues of Silver Bay. He was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church, Purdue Alumni, American Legion Post 109, and the U.S. Air Force Museum Foundation in Dayton, Ohio. The family thanks Mark Plachta, M.D., and his associate, Lisa; the staff of SMDC Hospice; and Barbara Bautch for the loving care they gave Art; and their neighbors, friends and the staff and volunteers of North Shore Area Partners for their support. Visitation 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Art's memory to Sychar Lutheran Church, 14 Edison Boulevard, Silver Bay, MN 55614 or St. Mary's Foundation (to benefit SMDC Hospice), 407 East 3rd Avenue, Duluth, MN 55805.
